Shell shale oil production

The shale industry has mostly focused on incremental improvements to reduce costs. In late 2016, Shell initiated iShale TM to explore a vision for the shale field of the future with several suppliers and partners. This field of the future would increase production while delivering significant decreases in costs and safety risks. Shell started producing tight gas in the early 1950s in south Texas. Today we produce enough natural gas in North America to meet the energy needs of millions of homes. We are also exploring for tight oil and gas in locations in the USA, Canada, and Argentina. Read more about tight and shale gas in the Americas – opens on our US website Permian. Shell is exploring for and producing light tight oil (LTO) in the Permian Basin, which is North America’s premier shale play. Permian is Shell’s core LTO asset with accelerated production in selected areas.

Abundant global supplies of natural gas and oil lie locked tightly in rock formations such as tight sandstone and shale. Over the next few years, Shell is expecting a boost to oil production from its deep water offshore assets in Brazil and the US Gulf of Mexico, and could invest in new liquefied natural gas Shell has earmarked between $2 billion and $3 billion per year, roughly 10 percent of its capital expenditure, for shale until 2020. Gas production will remain largely flat in the coming years and We expect to double total production of shale oil and gas from about 250,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day (boe/d) in 2017 to about 500,000 boe/d by the end of the decade. Continuous Improvement. Shell has relentlessly driven nimbleness in its shales activities.

This was equal to about 63% of total U.S. crude oil production in 2019. Tight oil is oil embedded in low-permeable shale, sandstone, and carbonate rock

Shale gas and oil. Shell sees shale gas and oil as a critical part of the energy transition. We have a mature competitive shale business in the Americas. In our operations, we place top priority on protecting the safety of our employees, the communities where we operate and the environment.
